!!Halal!!
Old Chang Kee
http://www.oldchangkee.com/

3 posts in a week!! ^^v I'm amazing. Finally back up to speed. But I think I'm beginning to put on weight... even my girlfriend's noticing it... thats bad.. very bad. Anyways, another household name and extremely popular franchise in Singapore. Its Old Chang Kee!! Its probably the only franchise where you will always see elderly men and women hard at work. And from what I'v experienced, service is always pleasant. Aside from the service, its the food which is also just as good or even better. Everything they have there is fried, even the Yam and Pineapple pies. Their cheapest item is $0.90 and the most expensive is $1.50. Easily affordable by anyone young or old. Even more so for students.

Anyways, my favorites as well as my girlfriend's are the Curry'O and the Sotong OnStik. The Pineapple Pie is great too. I think its tastier than McDonalds apple pie and cheaper too :)

Piping Hot!
All Crust & stuffed with Curry Potatoe.
Who can resist..?

Curry'O has got to be the best thing on Old Chang Kee's menu.
Its got a tough crusty outer crust and always tastes good when eaten hot. Its creamy on the inside and can easily make for a simple meal. Occasionally when I'm on a very tight budget, the Curry O is definitely the lifesaver for me when I need something cheap to eat. Having a cup of hot "Teh Halia Ga Dai"(Ginger Milk Tea with more creamer & sweetener) compliments the Curry'O even more and gives an all rounded wholesome feeling to the experience of savouring it.

Sotong OnStik, tender and juicy...No regrets ^^v

Sotong OnStik, if you love fried calamari you have to definitely try this!!
You will not be dissappointed at all, not one bit!! The first time I tried this, was when my mum bought it for me. It was love at first bite!! Crisp outside, soft and juicy inside. The batter used to coat the squid is a force to be matched. I have yet to taste anything better than this. At $1.50, its very affordable. But you will probably have to eat about 3-4 sticks before feeling like it was a meal. What I would do is to buy 1 Curry'O and 1-2 Sotong OnStik. They make a decent meal together. There is a down side to the Sotong onStik. It can sometimes be very hard, I'm guessing that it may have been re-fried or fried for too long. Generally, you won't go wrong trying the sotong onstik ;)

As much as I would like to sing praises to Old Chang Kee for the franchising of Singapore's traditional local fair. I can't really come to that point. Most of their items are all rather oily. I personally think, it wouldn't be too healthy to have this on a daily basis. Everything is fried!! Still nothing comes close to the value and taste of Old Chang Kee, they have reasonable pricing and provide very good snacking foods, perfect for times when you're studying very hard for exams.

If you really need something without or as little oil as possible, I definitely recommend Subway.

Sweet Talk Bubble Tea

!!Halal!!
Sweet Talk

Drinks at $1.50-$2.00

Close to a decade a go, Bubble tea, also called "Boba" tea invaded Singapore. Back then each cup was priced at about $2.50. Now this drink has become sort of a franchise as well as an icon of this generation. One of the leading companies devoted to Bubble Tea, would definitely have to be Sweet Talk. I remember drinking so many cups of this oddly named concoction. Yes, and I'm still hooked on it. Anyone and everyone drinks this. Especially so for students. A fine example would be, the number of students going home from school crowd around the Sweet Talk branch at Tampines bus interchange. They have a large menu of drinks, some ice-blended and juices as well. All sweet and some sour. But if you haven't figured what sorta guy I am... then I'll tell ya... I'm all SWEET!!!! :P I don't care how anyone views this...-.- But I'll always take my sugar, BARE, RAW and SWEET!

Okay.. down to business, I'll personally recommend 2 flavours, tried and tested over a decade... from my point of view of course ^^v They are, Pineapple Milk Tea & Chocolate Milk Tea.

Sweet Talk Logo!! Just to let anyone who lives or is passing by Kembangan MRT. There's a branch at the MRT's Bus Stop ;)

Bubble Tea & Juices.. A sight I stand in Awe of.....

Pineapple Milk Tea, been drinking it since I was age 15 ^^v

Pineapple Milk Tea, sound strange? I'v gotten alot of strange reactions when friends ask me what's my favourite milk tea and I actually tell them that its this. I know it seems like a bad combination, how milk tea and pineapple can go well. Don't be skeptical, take a more prudent approach and listen or even better still go and try this out after reading this. It doesn't taste weird!!! If you like yogurt drinks, you'll love this just as much. It simply tastes like pineapple yoghurt. Its got a creamy texture and a mellow citric like sweetness. Creamy and sweet always go well together ^^v Even better if it tastes like pineapple yoghurt. And this is exactly how pineapple milk tea goes. MY FAVOURITE!!! Just remember to shake it very well till the pineapple syrup has mixed up with the milk tea. Only buy this from Sweet Talk. Haven't found a better place which sells this

Chocolate Milk Tea, tastey but you can get better at other Bubble Tea shops.

Chocolate Milk tea will always remain as a classic. The one they have at Sweet Talk is nice and pleasant to drink. But I can assure you that at the same price or slighty more, you can get a concoction worthy to be called "Chocolicious". Its not fantastic but its definitely good enough to momentarily qwell a chocolate crave... as long as that craving isn't too large..he..he. Anyways, at $1.50 its not a bad investment.

To conclude, Bubble Tea will always remain an icon of our culture. It lures students like Bees to honey and can be the sort of thing you have everyday and your age doesn't matter. Subjective only to your tolerance to Sugar.

Pasar Malam aka Night Market

!!Halal & Non-Halal Treats!!
Night Market(NM) aka Pasar Malam
(Randomly spotted around Singapore)

I'm well aware that my Blog posts are severely late...-.- I am also aware that in Singapore, just beside the MRT, a Night Market has just been setup. Its been around for the past 2 weeks, I just hope they haven't moved by the time anyone reads this post... I'v started to procrastinate about writing this blog... this does not bode well. Anyways, Night markets spring up seemingly randomly around Singapore and offer decent food, buys and its always fun to walk around and browse through the good up for sale. Places that I visit regularly to spot for NMs or to just do window shopping would be Tampines and Bedok. They come around preiodically and I simply love the food there.

Food here is reasonably cheap and is mainly for snacking or to satisfy a craving. Don't expect to get an all round meal when you visit NMs. Its because the food offered here are mainly Quick Eats, which makes it suitable and affordable to anyone which includes students. Prices range from $1-4, depending on what you would like to try. Popular Favourites would be Ramily Burgers, Murthabak(Egg fried with meat onto Bread), cup corn, steamed peanuts & Fried Chicken Drumsticks (which are large). They also have a variety of traditional foods like Tu-Tu Kueh and assorted colored cakes too.

I'm gonna be introducing 2 items which lure me to NMs. Cup Corn & Cotton Candy.

Salty, sweet & bursting with goodness. A healthy treat ^^v

Cup corn is perhaps one of the healthier choices at NMs. Its lightly oily and has moderate salt content. The corn is steamed and then mixed together with butter and salt. The combination goes well. I'll try my best to describe its taste... When the corn is placed onto your tongue, you'll taste a slight salty buttery taste and as soon as you crunch down on the corn, it bursts with corny sweetness. Salty and Sweet meld together perfectly!! I simply love this. Do note that, at different NMs, Cup Corn can taste different. What affects this would be the person who prepares the cup corn, he may add less salt or butter which greatly affects the taste. Yet $1.50 a cup, there's really no loss to just having it!

Popcorn, Cotton Candy & Honey!! SUGAR RUSH!!!

Yes, call me a sucker for sugar, but I LOVE MY COTTON CANDY!! I try not to have this too often because it can just be too sweet. What the heck, I still love it. At $1 a packet, I would buy a packet and walk around the NM savouring it. There isn't much i can seem to say about it because its just sugar and its sweet. It would normally kill my tongue after having a packet, but simply love the texture of it as it feels like a sweet fiber which dissolves into a salve in my mouth. Very satisfying!!

Fried chicken cutlets anyone? This beats KFC ^^v

Traditional food, has coconut in it I think.

Well in conclusion, I wouldn't say you can't get your fill from the eats at NMs but you can definitely get consistant servings and varieties from NMs. It may cost you about $4 worth of eats, but for students the servings and prices are decent and not really overpriced. A highly recommended eats for students, especially when you're up for a snack!!
