Old Chang Kee

3 posts in a week!! ^^v I'm amazing. Finally back up to speed. But I think I'm beginning to put on weight... even my girlfriend's noticing it... thats bad.. very bad. Anyways, another household name and extremely popular franchise in Singapore. Its Old Chang Kee!! Its probably the only franchise where you will always see elderly men and women hard at work. And from what I'v experienced, service is always pleasant. Aside from the service, its the food which is also just as good or even better. Everything they have there is fried, even the Yam and Pineapple pies. Their cheapest item is $0.90 and the most expensive is $1.50. Easily affordable by anyone young or old. Even more so for students.
Anyways, my favorites as well as my girlfriend's are the Curry'O and the Sotong OnStik. The Pineapple Pie is great too. I think its tastier than McDonalds apple pie and cheaper too :)
Piping Hot!
All Crust & stuffed with Curry Potatoe.
Who can resist..?
Curry'O has got to be the best thing on Old Chang Kee's menu. Its got a tough crusty outer crust and always tastes good when eaten hot. Its creamy on the inside and can easily make for a simple meal. Occasionally when I'm on a very tight budget, the Curry O is definitely the lifesaver for me when I need something cheap to eat. Having a cup of hot "Teh Halia Ga Dai"(Ginger Milk Tea with more creamer & sweetener) compliments the Curry'O even more and gives an all rounded wholesome feeling to the experience of savouring it.
Sotong OnStik, if you love fried calamari you have to definitely try this!! You will not be dissappointed at all, not one bit!! The first time I tried this, was when my mum bought it for me. It was love at first bite!! Crisp outside, soft and juicy inside. The batter used to coat the squid is a force to be matched. I have yet to taste anything better than this. At $1.50, its very affordable. But you will probably have to eat about 3-4 sticks before feeling like it was a meal. What I would do is to buy 1 Curry'O and 1-2 Sotong OnStik. They make a decent meal together. There is a down side to the Sotong onStik. It can sometimes be very hard, I'm guessing that it may have been re-fried or fried for too long. Generally, you won't go wrong trying the sotong onstik ;)
As much as I would like to sing praises to Old Chang Kee for the franchising of Singapore's traditional local fair. I can't really come to that point. Most of their items are all rather oily. I personally think, it wouldn't be too healthy to have this on a daily basis. Everything is fried!! Still nothing comes close to the value and taste of Old Chang Kee, they have reasonable pricing and provide very good snacking foods, perfect for times when you're studying very hard for exams.
If you really need something without or as little oil as possible, I definitely recommend Subway.
Thus concludes, The CuddlyGoldFish's review of Old Chang Kee!!
